Back from vacation, and yes it was great to get away but it's better to be back! Kind of like school was......I couldn't wait to get out for the summer, then come September I couldn't wait to get back.

No computer for five whole days! You know, I really didn't miss it. I made it whole week with no cigarettes too. I'm just getting rid of ALL my addictions. :)

MEET YOUR BLOCK CAPTAINS

OK folks, I know we are off to a good start. It may not seem that way to all of you and I do apologize. It's not the Group, it's me. I am hereby proclaiming that I am technically challenged. I've been trying to add our newsletter to a new feed Google just acquired called Fireburner or Feedburner and I have let it "consume" me. I am very bad about fully reading directions. I get started with just enough info and think I can go with it, only to turn around and find I've been bitten in the .......well, you know. At any rate we are still not connected with Fireburner (I believe it's called a "reader"), and I will keep trying because it will really put us out there in 'web-space or cyber-space or whatever you call these networks. Meanwhile, I do hope all the members are receiving our Newsletter.

Now, all you members get out there & meet your Block Captains! I communicate mostly by computer. All the Block Captains (with three exceptions) get updates on the computer. The ones who do not have access to computers will be getting a copy from me to share with their block. That's the best I can do for now, until I get a printer. With a printer I'll be able to give each member on my block a copy. My block (in case you have forgotten) is the Senior Building here at the Roswell Housing Authority. I have been out to meet a few of them but it got very hot, and I had to stop because of breathing difficulties. I WILL BE OUT THERE as soon as it cools off a little, rest assured.

I'm finding myself more & more geared to becoming an advocate for Seniors. In my own case, I have run into unbelievable difficulties getting with Medicaid and/or Medicare. I never realized what a problem it is until it basically slapped me in the face. I'm studying up on information, telephone numbers, etc. now in order to be able to assist my particular block.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH NEWS
I've already begun on my corner, in the mornings (I awake at an unbelievable early time)I watch the school kids till they get on the school bus. I talk to them about how their day will be going. My daughter says they probably think I'm just an eccentric old woman. Ask me if I care, I'm still going to watch and make sure they are safe. I went over to where they wait with a trash bag & picked up empty beer & liquor bottles and told them I didn't even want them to have to look at the mess. You know, I think they really appreciated it! Well, it's a start.

PICTURES
Yes I have pictures to share of some of our group at the dinner given by United Way recently. I am attempting to post them, if you don't see them you'll know I STILL have a problem. Hope it turns out!

MEETING DATE
Groveway Community Group, Inc. will have it's regular meeting 8/21/07, 7:00 p.m., at 89 Grove Way, UPSTAIRS in the conference room. Hope to see some of you there. Since I will be joining the Groveway Group, I will be reporting back to all the Block Captains. Of course, if any of you want to join please do,however, we will continue our Residents Helping Residents meetings. Will update meeting information later.

I will try not to be so long-winded most blogs, I do have a tendency to run on as they say. Sorry.

HELLO NEIGHBORS!

Welcome to our first issue, August 2, 2007.

There will probably be a few mistakes, so bear with me. I have been working on this Newsletter for our group for quite a while. There are still some "bugs" to work out, but hopefully you will find it interesting and informative.

I realize there are quite a few issues going on right now in our beautiful City of Roswell, and I hope to make this a place to talk about those things. Maybe even come up with some solutions.

As most of you know, "Residents Helping Residents", is a spin off program of Groveway Community Group. We decided at our last meeting (which is open to all Roswell Residents) to combine our regular monthly meeting with Groveway to cut out one extra meeting per month. The meeting dates will be posted in this newsletter in the future. We have "steering" by United Way. This means they are and have been available to our group to help us in forming the group and giving any technical assistance we need. We do not receive any operating monies from them. We have, however, been the recipients of a grant funded by United Way for our 1st Annual Teen Camp that began this summer. The grant was written & submitted by one of our future leaders, 15 year old Austin Bohannon. Terrica Banks & Booker Nuckles ran the camp with help from two of our teens, Shelby and Austin, and provided a wonderful alternative for teens 13 to 16 years to spend their free time. Terry Shields was a tremendous help to us in securing the space we needed from Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Also many volunteers were available to help with motivational speaking, chaperoning or transportation.

We have 8 volunteer Block Captains. They are:

Austin Bohannon (with help from Martha Bohannon) =Myrtle St. & Zion Cir.
Katrina Lacey (with help from Betty Bean) = Oxbo to Grimes Bridge
Annie Ruth Manning = Pleasant Hill & Bush
Anne Strickland = Webb St.
Penelope Moore-Houser = Roswell Housing Authority-Senior Bldg.
Terrica Banks = Roswell Housing Authority - Oak St.
Margie Brown = Roswell Housing Authority - Grove Pl. & Myrtle St.
Maria Gaeta (with help from Jeannette Perez) - Roswell Housing Authority -
